Behind the college grounds stand a two story building donated by ex-congressman John Orola. The second floor of this old structure used to be the library of the academe for the last decade since its transfer from the previous NOPCC site. The room was narrow, half of which was occupied by shelves and service counters. Indeed, that venue was too small and less developed to cater the growing population of the college and greatly calls for an improvement – of area and resources.
The construction of the New ICT Building Project of then Fortune Towne Campus Director Dr. Eduardo Sayson is the biggest accomplishment for the campus since its foundation. This new structure became an icon which commenced further transformation in the campus – of physical and administrative.Emphasizing the great importance of the library to the college, the inclusion of the library among the offices to occupy the building was by no means forgotten in the blueprint. It was ‘The heart of CHMSC’, the phrase coined by the director referring to the library, stressing its merit and priority at par with other offices of the college. The left side on the second floor of the building becomes the new site for the library, which area is tantamount to three classrooms of the building. After its grand completion and inauguration in 2010, the library started transferring all its equipment and materials to its new site – taking its first step to more development and innovations.
By cart and by hands, students and library staffs joined together to aid the transfer of all library furniture and materials to its new location. Shelves were repainted, fixtures were prepared and new staffs were hired and trained to welcome another school year of worthy service. New furniture and fixtures were purchased, though the existing ones were still used, to contain additional academic materials and paraphernalia. The succeeding months of operation after the transfer were a transition period for the library operation. The delay in the arrival of further essential library furniture and service materials were to some extent had affected the first months of operation in the new location, but services were, to a great extent, satisfactorily executed.
The intangible contribution of the library to its dedicated clientele was even enhanced when the office was improved. More students were attracted and motivated to visit this easiest and cheapest venue to learn. Visitor’s population increased concurrent with the increase in college population. Likewise, new services were offered to the students, including photocopying and free Wi-Fi access.
This month marks the anniversary of the library on its new site, and will also be a start of another step for valuable services from this so called ‘heart of the college’. Last year was just an initial step for more innovations in the future. The library is optimistic in achieving its purpose and goals, keeping its mission of inspiring and motivating students to study hard, and be a huge provider in the learning process of the academe.
